August Dry Fly Challenges, East Outlet |

Breezy and Cool 50-degree air and warmer water in the low 70's under a partly cloudy sky gave Lon and me continuing challenges as we prospected for Salmon and Brook Trout on Maine's East Outlet of the Kennebec below Moosehead Lake in Greenville. Lon, an experienced angler from New York, had never caught a Landlocked Salmon and brought some serious fly fishing tools to the game. He used a fine bamboo rod loaded with a floating line and long, 10-foot leader. The pressure was on me as I selected flies. First a Madam X Hopper with a trailing Olive emerger brought Lon a few slaps from hungry Salmon, but I saw Caddis in the air and we needed to have a single, direct line to the fish if Lon was to match the lightening-fast strikes with a rapid hook set. A number 16 Zelon Caddis emerger did the foolery quite nicely and the 'skunk' was off my shoulders. Lon landed this pretty Salmon.
We moved down the river and probed a few of the more fishy flows while the cool air turned downright cold and the sky became more cloudy than sunny. Lon was perched on a rock and was throwing a long cast to a Salmon lie when the best fish of the day struck the small emerger. The fish was in the air several times, showing us that he was nearly 3 lb., 20-inch-fat, broad in the middle. Because Lon had a precarious position, he couldn't turn to control the fish with pressure and soon the fish began to take advantage of this. Running toward Lon, the Salmon released pressure and vaulting in the air some three feet, he shook his head and threw the hook. Better to have had the fight than to have never felt the fish. We'll look for revenge in Lon's behalf another day.
The magnificent Beach Pool at the East outlet was our lunch spot. In posting these photos I have tried to show the breadth of the pool. Lon covered all of it on this beautiful pre-fall day. Good going on your first Salmon, Lon and thanks for a fine trip. Marshall
