Jin Casting at Madison, Maine |
We arrived at Bingham on the
Kennebec River at 9:30 AM with the river flow at a comfortable 2200cfs.
Trout began rising at 10 AM and although the wind was calm, the fish
were super-picky! We had chances at many rising Trout and Jin landed a
12-inch Splake. A Splake is a hybrid cross between a Brook Trout and a
Lake Trout. They are stocked in Wyman Lake, primarily to give Ice
Fisherman something to catch. The Splake that drop down into the river
compete with the wild Rainbows in the Upper Kennebec. Sad. We saw other
Rainbows though in the 18 to 20-inch class that were too smart for us
today.
We moved down river to Solon and ate our lunch at Evergreen Campground.
My friend, Craig, loaned his boat to me and Jin and I motored upriver
where Jin caught a leaping Salmon on a #16 Blue Winged Olive. The
hatches were over, so we headed to Madison.
We waded the beautiful stretch
pictured left. Jin was impressed with the Eagles and the quality of this
water. Even though the Brown Trout were not up and feeding, we had a few
strikes at a Caddis Dry. All in all, we had a great time on our "Wade
Tour of the Kennebec".
