LARGER
RIVER SYSTEMS: The Kennebec River
from Moosehead Lake to Waterville is my home water. Hatches progress
northward through the season. We follow the hatches, beginning in May at
Fairfield, below the Shawmut Dam where we dry fly fish and nymph for
holdover Browns and Rainbows. As the summer progresses, we'll travel
North to Madison, Solon, Bingham and to the famed East Outlet where
Brook Trout and Landlocked Salmon are the quarry. Fall is prime time for
nymph fishing East Outlet, the Dead River and smaller streams. Fall is
optimum time for Baetis hatches and baitfish
migrations. What week we fish may dictate where
we'll fish with optimum success.
FOR THE
SMALL STREAM LOVER: Nearby, I have several favorite small streams where
we can test nymphing skills in spring, summer and especially fall.
Late October nymphing starts with Caddis Larvae and ends with egg flies. The
two Brown Trout at left succumbed to a Bead Head Caddis Larvae fished in a
small stream 25 minutes from my home.
