Lunch was roast beef on rye as we
took in the view of the ancient Indian Camp and the river at Evergreen
Campground in Solon. We took time to nymph the great run in front of the
camps and then we headed for Madison and the Pines, below town.

Terry's Brook Trout had a beautifully vermiculated back.
We saw several rising Browns at our
brief stay at Madison, but failed to hook up. There were Caddis and as I
wanted to show Terry the Great Eddy in Skowhegan, we left the fish to
feed and headed down river.

Terry and I prospected some haunts
on the Kennebec River. We started out in Bingham where the flow was a
wadable 3400cfs. The sun was shining bright and the water temp was a
comfortable 70-degrees as it flowed from the bottom-release Wyman Dam.
On his third cast with a #10 Stimulator, Terry hooked this splendid
native Brook Trout (seen here as he revived). We landed one more, a bit
larger, perhaps 14-inches.
Leaving Bingham, we headed to
the base of Williams Dam in Solon where we had rising trout in the
eddies. We learned tactics and practiced casting until the hunger pangs
called us to have lunch.

Left is Terry, pointing to where
the fish rise at dusk. The Great Eddy in Skowhegan is a dry fly paradise
seldom fished by the multitudes so it's a perfect spot to hook up with a
hefty Brown Trout during an evening rise.
Thank for a terrific day, Terry! |
